Duties

Help
  • Flight line simulator instructor for undergraduate RPA pilot training and graduate simulator instructor pilot training for aircraft operations in the National Airspace System/operations under International CAO rules.
  • Applying aviator experience, serves as an academic instructor for students in Undergraduate Remotely Piloted Aircraft Initial Qualification (RIQ) training and Simulator Instructor Training (SIT).
  • Applying officer and leadership experience, serves as role-model mentor and instructor for Remotely Piloted Aircraft training students and Simulator Instructor Training Students.
  • Performs other duties related to accomplishment of the unit operational and training mission.
  • Carries out special projects, such as preparing and presenting research material in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

  • Experience as a rated military aviator (instructor pilot) is critical to the successful completion of assigned duties. Previous experience as an instructor in a military aircraft is highly desirable.
  • The ability to instruct a wide variety of interdisciplinary studies: Aerodynamics, Flying Fundamentals, Basic and Advanced Instrument Flying, Aircraft Systems, Weather, Crew Resource Management.

  • The ability to quickly adapt to rapidly changing training tools, methods and emerging requirements is highly desirable.

Qualifications

SIM INSTRUCTOR

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
A current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot certificates and/or appropriate military ratings and possess the knowledge and skills required for the position. NOTE: You must submit documentation to provide proof of certification and/or rating, such as a copy of your commercial pilot certificate or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate

AND
Certification and Ratings:
A current Commercial Pilot Certificate or the appropriate military rating. NOTE: If establishing eligibility based on flight experience applicant must provide official orders, forms, or logbooks showing your status as a rated military pilot, flight instructor, or flight examiner, as appropriate.

Minimum Flight Hour Requirements:
Have the knowledge and skills required for the work and meet the minimum flight hour requirements, including: a current Commercial Pilot Certificate or the appropriate military rating. Additionally, have the FAA Flight Instructor Certificate or the military equivalent rating. (The pilot certificate must include the rating(s) appropriate to the work of the position to be filled. Note: Candidates establishing eligibility based on military flight experience must provide official orders, forms, or logbooks showing their status as a rated military pilot, flight instructor, or flight examiner, as appropriate. Other certificates that meet or exceed the requirements of the Commercial Pilot Certificate are also acceptable, e.g., an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate), for a GS-2181-12 AIRPLANE PILOT (SIMULATOR INSTRUCTOR) position and have a total of 1500 Total Flight Hours; 250 Pilot-In-Command Hours; 75 Night Flying Hours; 75 flight hours of Instrument Time (at least 10 hours must be in actual instrument conditions); and 500 Instructor Time Flight Hours. NOTE: You must submit proof of Flight Hours.
Minimum Flight Hour Requirements
The following flight hour requirements apply to all applicants:

  1. Total Flight Time -- Flight time as pilot-in-command or copilot in aircraft of any weight or category is creditable for this requirement. For in-service placements actions, up to one-fourth of the total flight hours may by waived for candidates who have demonstrated possession of the knowledge and skills needed to perform the work, provided:
  • They hold the certificates and ratings required;
  • They have acquired the pilotin-command hours and flight hours in other categories essential to performance of the work;
  • They meet the requirements in terms of level and quality of experience; and
  • Their flying history indicates they are qualified for the position.
  1. Pilot-In-Command -- Only flight hours acquired as pilot-in-command are creditable.
  2. Night Flying -- For inservice placement actions at the GS-11 level and above, 25 hours may be waived if the candidate demonstrates the ability to perform the work.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of aircraft systems operation, operating procedures, aerodynamics, emergency procedures, aviation weather, flight hazards, flight profile management, navigation, basic and advanced instrument training, and aircraft safety, mishap prevention, crew resource management, and of the operation, characteristics, and limitations of the corresponding aircraft simulator.
2. Knowledge of the methods, principles, practices, and programs related to curriculum development, instructional techniques, and training resources. 3. Knowledge of the Instructional Systems Development (ISD) process, requirements of rapidly emerging and changing Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) training, and the Simulator Instructor Training - RPA syllabus.
4. Skill in the use of a variety of computer applications and software, to include simulator systems sufficient to meet desired learning objectives and to demonstrate flying procedures and maneuvers. Skill in the use of electronic flight bags to deliver academic and simulator training.
5. Ability to effectively lead, develop and mentor future military leaders.
6. Skill in review and analysis techniques and methods to appraise assigned programs or projects; identify needs and solutions; develop goals, policies, and procedures; monitor progress; and evaluate success.
7. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing to include classroom instruction before large and small audiences.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY: You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
