Duties

Help
  • You will assist in the preparation of criminal and civil cases by conducting legal research, writing briefs and opinions, conducting investigations and interviewing witnesses.
  • You will assist attorneys who counsel and represent Sailors, their family members and retirees in personal legal matters in areas such as family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant law, tax, bankruptcy, immigrations and naturalization law.
  • You may support attorneys in other areas, such as federal tort claims, operational and cyber law, international law, and environmental law.

ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible for the GS-0999-09, you must meet the following level of education requirement:
-You must have completed 2 academic years of graduate level education; ie. You are currently in your second year of law school and will successfully complete the second year by the end of the current academic year; OR a master's degree OR equivalent graduate degree.
-You must be pursuing a Juris Doctorate at a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
-You are eligible if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess the completion of two academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

QUALIFYING EDUCATION:
1) A high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and
2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education: (i) A technical or vocational school; (ii) A 2-year or 4-year college or university; (iii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or (iv) A home-school curriculum.
