Duties

Help

As a Supervisory Geophysicist within the Geologic Hazards Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: 

  • As Seismic Network Manager at the Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory (ASL), incumbent directs the operations of over 300 seismic stations and oversees collaborative efforts for data distribution and exchange with foreign centers, government agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Provide direction, supervision and oversight for maintenance and operations of global and US networks acquiring digital, broadband data for earthquake monitoring, tsunami warning, and scientific research.
  • Serves as the expert technical advisor and consultant to the Scientist-in-charge in the planning, coordination, and direction of networks at the ASL.

Physical Demands:

The work is primarily sedentary; however, some walking, bending, and lifting are required during installation and testing of equipment. Work in remote locations may require significant travel for durations of one to three weeks in conditions ranging from the extremes of the tropics to the Antarctic, and ranging up to 10,000 ft. elevation, with hiking into some sites.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in an office environment but also involves occasional participation in the field and in laboratories, and travel to lengthy meetings or remote locations, requiring strenuous activities.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.
  • Prior to appointment, the person selected will be required to take and pass (both at Federal expense):
    (1) a physical exam and (2) a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. From thereon, the incumbent may be subject to random drug testing.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications

GS-13: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original or ongoing geophysical studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, scientists have extensive knowledge of the principles of geophysics, exhibit a highly developed ability in their application, and have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
