The Advanced Medical Support Assistant position serves as a Consult Coordinator for Community Care. The Advanced MSA works collaboratively with other members of expanded health care teams (i.e., Patient Aligned Care Team, Specialty Care) including Community Care providers, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff, etc. to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care.
Summary
The Advanced Medical Support Assistant position serves as a Consult Coordinator for Community Care. The Advanced MSA works collaboratively with other members of expanded health care teams (i.e., Patient Aligned Care Team, Specialty Care) including Community Care providers, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff, etc. to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Performs clerical duties, customer service and other duties as assigned for the proper and timely treatment of patients.
Maintains appointment schedules for Community care.
Communicates with Community Care providers to ensure they accept VA patients and payments.
Prepares any required pre-appointment documents.
Coordinates internal and external care between customers and providers.
Supports patient safety standards using the correct Veterans Affairs identification of all patients through the use of two forms of identification.
Collects, scans, and updates health insurance information.
Routinely communicates with physicians, case managers and other allied health professional staff using sound interpersonal skills and remains consistently aware of sensitive information.
Consistently communicates and treats customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
Able to effectively communicate proactively, under stressful situations.
Assesses data reflective of the patients status and interprets the information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide care needed as described in the services' policies and procedures.
Protects data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion.
Demonstrates infection control practice for disease prevention.
Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday - 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (Schedules may be adjusted to meet patient needs.) Financial Disclosure Report: Not required

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/02/2019.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR
Education One year above high school; OR
Experience/Education Combination Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
English Language Proficiency. Supervisory Medical Support Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Preferred Experience: Advanced Medical Support staff experience in a clinical office setting.
Grade Determinations:GS-6 Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5). Specialized Experience includes but is not limited to the ability to demonstrate: Operating computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records scheduling systems and/or reports; Scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with scheduling guidelines; Basic understanding of medical terminology; Communicating effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels; Identifying customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, insuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.
Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.
Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care.
Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.
Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.
Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians
