This position is for a counseling for clinical psychologist to function as a staff psychologist in the Substance Use Disorders (SUD) section in the Mental Health Service of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System (VAAAHS). The incumbent functions as part of a multidisciplinary team providing clinical services for veteran patients who have identified needs for addiction treatment (SUD).
The incumbent provides professional service across a range of evidence-based treatments for addictions approved by VA for mental health issues and problems. The patient population also includes those veterans who also have other mental health and/or physical health problems being managed in VA. The incumbent is expected to provide psychological assessment, intervention, and consultation services as assigned; and to coordinate clinical care between services and across the continuum of care; primarily, but not exclusively, for outpatients. The incumbent collaborates with other providers in the SUD section and participates in team activities which are necessary in order to provide safe and effective care for veteran patients. The incumbent also participates in mandated case management, clinical evaluation, and review of care which are necessary components of clinical services to maintain VAAAHS accreditations.

Multi-Grade Career Ladder: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed under the duties section represent the full performance level of GS-13. At the GS-11 and GS-12 grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-13. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Creditable Experience:
(1) Current Professional Psychology Practice. To be creditable, psychological work experience can be obtained through paid or non-paid employment providing psychological work or through participating in a supervised postdoctoral psychology training program (i.e., fellowship or residency). Psychological work experience must have occurred after the doctoral degree was obtained and must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with current professional psychology practice. "Professional psychology practice" includes but is not limited to the following psychology-oriented job duties: providing professional clinical services, conducting research, carrying out education and training activities, carrying out program evaluation activities, clinical consultation, supervision and administration.
(2) Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it is post-doctoral experience as a professional psychologist directly related to the duties to be performed. Qualifying experience must also be at a level comparable to or exceeding professional psychology experience at the next lower level.
(3) Part-time Experience. Part-time experience is creditable according to its relationship to a full-time workweek.
(4) Post-Doctoral Degree Fellowships. Postdoctoral fellowships or residencies are training programs in an advanced area of clinical practice. Training as a fellow or resident is considered to be creditable experience on a year-for-year basis.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
