Summary

As a Food Service Worker with additional experience and training, the employee performs duties that require proficiency in special procedures and a broad knowledge of service operations, such as food preparation, dishwashing, dry and refrigerated storage, and food/beverage serving. The incumbent will be under the general supervision of the Food Service Supervisor and/or the Food Service Work Leader.

Duties

Help

This position requires 1) having knowledge of modified diet principles, patient preference and additional order substitution, 2) showing ability to guide or instruct groups of food service workers, 3) demonstrating knowledge of cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing agents (cleansing and scouring powders), oven cleaners, stainless steel cleaners, de-limiting agents and dishwashing detergents, 4) is familiar with storing and caring for food and supplies, nourishments, salads, obtaining supplies, using basic arithmetic (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying and fractions in order to weigh, measure and portion food items and ingredients) as required for this position, 5) checking, sorting and inventorying of subsistence and supplies, 6) completing food service work assignments, 7) following written and oral instructions (daily menus, work sheets and schedules, routine dietary computer reports, bulletins and manuals pertaining to food service work), sanitation, operation and care of equipment used in food service, 8) retrieving dietary information from computer software programs, 9) setting up serving lines, 10) checking accuracy of patient meal trays and nourishment boxes, and 11) heating food to its proper serving temperature.

Work Schedule: Friday through Tuesday 11:30am-8pm, having Wednesdays and Thursdays off

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Working knowledge of basic modified diet principles and their application to patient meal tray and nourishment assembly (Screen Out Element).
  • Knowledge of work practices, cleanliness, neatness and sanitation in food service work.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow written and oral instructions, policies and procedures relating to food preparation and serving work.
  • Knowledge of technical practices in food service work such as dietary computer programs and reports, checking trays, food service temperatures and requisitioning.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work is performed in areas where floors may become wet from spillage or mopping and present a potential safety hazard requiring caution in movement. The employee is subject to temperature extremes from the hot kitchen to refrigeration/freezer units and loading docks. Steam and heat from dishwashing may cause occasional uncomfortable temperatures and humidity. There is exposure to cuts, burns, bruises and injury from machines.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
