Summary

The primary purpose of the position is to provide a system of delivering meals to patients following the policies and procedures pertaining to the approved method of service after confirming patient's name and birth date. The position is responsible for picking up soiled trays after meal service is over and assisting where necessary in the Room Service operation. This position is responsible for maintaining a friendly and cheerful demeanor at all time.

Duties

Help

Places food items on patients trays on a Room Service assembly line according to the individual meal ticket.Sets up serving station with correct utensils, supplies and foods when items run low on the Room Service serving station. breaks down and cleans station after the serving period or as needed. Transport and delivers meal trays to patient's bedside following scripting guidelines at all times. Relays any information to the supervisor that is different or not indicated on the meal ticket. Wears protective equipment provided insuring the safety of themselves other staff and the patient. When there are no trays for transporting and delivery, pick up dirty trays and continue daily cleaning assignments. Washes, peels, slices, dices and shreds fresh fruits and vegetables needed for the preparation of menu items. Receives, stores, rotates ad maintains inventory of fresh fruits and vegetables according to the "First in first out" principal, maintaining room service table sections. Prepares all cold items needed for the next days recipes. Portion salads and desserts following the quantity and portion size indicated on the computerized cold preparation sheet and menu. Prepares in between meal snacks and sets up all needed supplemental feedings for each area following automated lists and individual labels Makes sandwiches from prepared filings and inventories and maintains par levels of approved supplies and canned feedings. Applies special sanitary techniques in preparing formulas and tube feedings such as sterilizing equipment and sanitizing work areas. Scrapes, soaks, scour and scrubs the heavies cooking utensils, as mixing bowls and pots which because of their large size and weight, are awkward to handle. Operates mechanical dishwashing and pot washing machines removing inspection doors strainer screens, and spray arms for preventive maintenance and cleaning. Performs heavy duty cleaning tasks throughout food service areas, such as cleaning walls, exhaust hoods, spaces under and behind kitchen equipment; washing walls and floors with powered cleaning equipment; cleaning walk-in refrigerators and freezers; and sanitizing garbage collection areas and receptacles. Removes heavy garbage containers from collection areas and receptacles. Removes heavy garbage containers from collection area to disposal area; operates powered compactor.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Workers at this level may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They also may be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
