The Miami VA Healthcare System is looking for a Physician Assistant (PA) to work in the Hematology/Oncology Department within Medical Services. The PA provides care to the Veterans in the inpatient units and outpatient clinics while functioning as a physician extender and assist in the health-care management of the patients. The incumbent provides services while utilizing professional skills, objectivity, insight, advanced clinical training, and experience to evaluate and manage patients.
Summary
The Miami VA Healthcare System is looking for a Physician Assistant (PA) to work in the Hematology/Oncology Department within Medical Services. The PA provides care to the Veterans in the inpatient units and outpatient clinics while functioning as a physician extender and assist in the health-care management of the patients. The incumbent provides services while utilizing professional skills, objectivity, insight, advanced clinical training, and experience to evaluate and manage patients.
Some of the duties will be, but are not limited to:
Perform and document initial histories and physicals on inpatients and/or outpatients;
Assess, diagnose, treat and evaluate care that promotes wellness and prevents disease and/or injury;
Monitor chemotherapy administration and compliance;
Prescribe, administer and evaluate patient's response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment regimens, including blood/blood products, intravenous fluids and medications and oxygen;
Provide ongoing care for inpatients and/or outpatients;
Order, interpret and follow up on diagnostic tests, studies and procedures;
Facilitate timely imaging and lab tests;
Evaluate the effectiveness of health care provided and determine the need for therapeutic changes, additional diagnostic workups or specialty consultations;
Refer, order and coordinate care for patients, including: consultations from other healthcare providers, community health, home care, prosthetic equipment/supplies, physical and occupational therapy as needed;
Arrange inpatient admissions and writes admission orders;
Consult for fee base services and coordinate the care as needed;
Provide patient and family education and counseling in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and medications;
Document findings and relevant data in the medical record, including workload capture/encounter forms;
Participate in clinical research studies as appropriate; and
Collaborate with physicians/residents and other health care providers to manage complex health problems.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship:

Education:
The candidate must meet the following:(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.c.
Certification:
(1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.
(2) License: current Physician Assistant License(3) BLS Certificationd.
English Language Proficiency:
PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
Grade Determinations:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, the qualifications criteria in qualification standards must be met in determining the appropriate grade for appointment or promotion eligibility. Requirements for appointment or promotion to a specific grade are based on the candidate's ability to demonstrate the behaviors or responsibilities in one or more of the following categories: Clinical Proficiency, Education, Professional Development, Management/Administrative, Research, and Ethics and to meet the experience indicated below.
Full Grade.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, individuals appointed to this grade must meet all the following requirements:(1) Experience / Education. None beyond the basic requirements.
Intermediate Grade
Experience/Education
(1) 1 year of professional practice as a PA; or
(2) Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
(3) A Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Senior Grade
Experience/Education
(1) 3 years of professional practice as a PA; or
(2) 2 years of professional practice as a PA and successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
(3) 2 years of professional practice as a PA and a Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or(4) A Doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.
Chief Grade
Experience/Education
(1) Generally, an individual in this grade is able to demonstrate the behaviors listed in the areas below after 5 years of professional practice as a PA; and,
(2) The minimum education for this grade is a Master's Degree from a PA training program accredited by ARC-PA or in a health-related field of study. However, experience as a PA may be substituted for the Master's degree where the individual has an equivalent knowledge of the profession and has successfully
