Summary

As a WG-2 Food Service Worker, you will carry out assignments both with and without direct supervision. The primary purpose of this work is to support meal service in the Food Service department, prepare food items such as sandwiches, salads, desserts and other items as needed, deliver meals and nourishment to Veteran patients, utilize the dish machine to wash and sanitize plates, utensils, dishes and pans. Assist with maintaining sanitation standards throughout the kitchen.

Duties

Help

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Plating and serving during meal service, assist with the preparation of meals, which may include setting tables with such as silverware, condiments and beverages.
  • Deliver meals and nourishment to Veterans patients, following patient safety standards and using excellent customer service skills to assist patients with meal service.
  • Pick-up soiled trays and dirty dishes, return them to the kitchen, and wash and sanitize them using dish machine equipment.
  • Scrubs, washes, and sanitizes pots and pans.
  • Uses a floor scrubber and other cleaning equipment.
  • Maintains a safe and sanitary kitchen by following established guidelines and cleaning schedules for food safety, personal hygiene, sanitation, and workplace safety.
  • Prepares quality food items to be served to Veterans.
  • Contributes to a Veteran-centered culture by preparing quality food items.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, rotating days, weekends, and holidays. Days off will vary.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: A Food Service Worker expends up to moderate energy in carrying trays, pushing tray carts and other carts, frequent lifting of food containers weighing 10-30 pounds, stacking dishes, and mopping floors. Spends significant amount of time standing and walking. Tray carts may be pushed long distances including corridors with ramps and sharp turns. Occasionally lifts up to 40 pounds. Duties require continuous standing, walking and bending. Subject to pressure of completing assignments in accordance with scheduling of activities.

Working Conditions: Due to the nature of the food service environment, this position is required to work in areas which may be uncomfortably humid, warm and noisy. Incumbent will be regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperatures in the hot kitchen, walk-in refrigerators and freezers, and while accessing outdoor garbage and recycling dumpsters. They will need to complete frequent hand washing and may have an increased risk of cuts, bruises and burns. They must use caution when working near wet floors.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
