Duties

Help

The Food Service Worker (Ambassador) acts as the Host/Hostess on the patient units. The Wage Grade (WG) 4 Food Service Worker (Ambassador) perform duties that require proficiency in certain procedures and a broad knowledge of food service operations in the role as Ambassador to ensure the highest level of nutritional care and customer service to patients with complex dietary needs of a 1A tertiary facility. This position will have the most patient contact of all patient service positions.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Interview patients to obtain food preferences and food allergies.
  • Obtaining and adjusting Veterans' menus on a daily basis - following up with the patient to assure satisfaction with meals.
  • Performing Call Center duties.
  • Prepares nourishment (bulk and individual snacks), food items for special feedings and tube feedings.
  • Delivering and retrieving patient trays.
  • Performing activities such as tray accuracy, food safety and temperature monitoring.
  • Observing meal service and ensuing all Veterans have received meals based on prescribe diet orders.
  • Acting as liaison between the patient, NFS Clinical Dietitians and Nursing Service to ensure proper communication of all patient nutrition needs.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Work schedule: Thursday - Monday, 11:30 am - 8:00 pm; Friday - Tuesday; 6:30 am - 3:00 pm. This vacancy may be used to fill other work schedules not listed above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Work involves continuous periods of standing and walking on tile floors throughout the Medical Center. Work additionally involves pushing large and heavy carts. Work requires periods of sedentary activity to enter data in computer. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds unassisted and more with assistance if needed. Frequently stoops, reaches, lifts, bends or carries food and kitchen equipment. Mental & emotional stability required.

Working Environment: Work is performed in a hospital. Incumbent is subjected to constant distractions and interruptions, including everyday risks/discomforts typical of an acute care medical center. Typically, work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been spilled. Employee is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigerators or freezers.

Workers are constantly exposed to the public which involves patients, professional hospital staff and other support personnel of the Medical Center. The importance of caring and courteous interpersonal relations, which at times can be under strained or difficult circumstances, is stressed. Must abide by personal hygiene standards and safe work procedures such as wearing designated personal protective equipment, hair covering and a clean uniform daily. Incumbent may be exposed to contagious diseases while working on inpatient care units. This position involves shift work and may require duty on weekends and holidays.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
