Summary

The expeditor position is assigned to Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) Seattle Division of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS). This position is the major quality control position for the meal assembly process. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating the assembly of meals while maintaining food safety standards. All meals must be checked for accuracy and adherence to quality assurance minimums and goals.

Duties

Help

The incumbent must assure that meal service is accurate, of acceptable quality, as well as timely. Incumbent provides quality customer service, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, visitors and staff throughout the VAPSHCS. Excellent communication skills are essential to this position.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Receives meal orders and coordinates the assembly of patient meals.
  • Checks all meals for accuracy, quality, and ensures a timely dispatch of food carts to the nursing units.
  • Neatly arranges and places hot and cold food items, appropriate condiments, desserts, beverages, and flatware on patient tray.
  • Ensures tray accuracy by checking menu items on the tray with the printed meal ticket.
  • Checks all food items for acceptability and appropriateness for diet order.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic food and nutrition principles.
  • When indicated initiates immediate corrective action to ensure accuracy.
  • Rejects any unacceptable food items and requests replacement items for them.
  • Assists higher graded cooks and/or independently prepares, portions and assembles menu items that require little or no processing such as cold sandwich fillings, cold plates, bag lunches, fruit cups, simple salads, coffee and like items.
  • Uses portion control utensils to meet established standards of portion control and accuracy.
  • Sets up appropriate foods, condiments, supplies, pellets, domes, dishes, cups, mugs and utensils required for room service meal assembly of regular and modified diets in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Delivers trays to patients and reports patients' comments.
  • Follows proper food handling techniques utilizing Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and facility policies and procedures.
  • Discusses and reports all system problems to Kitchen Supervisor or Operations Manager.
  • Ensures the integrity of stored items in working area.
  • Properly stores food items and supplies.
  • Discards outdated, improperly labeled and stored items.
  • Exhibits excellent customer service at all times.
  • Provides training to same or lower grade employees when asked by a Supervisor.
  • Operates and cleans a variety of food service equipment

3:30pm to 7:30pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires light to moderate physical effort with continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. May also be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
