Summary

Food Service Workers work in the Service and Production areas of Nutrition & Food Service at the Miami VA. They follow established procedures in food service operations to include food handling, preparation, storage and delivery/pickup and cleaning and sanitation. In these assigned areas, the food service worker provides patient care appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, cultural and age specific needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient.

Duties

Help

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • -Portions food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and containers.
  • -Label and distribute assembled items.
  • -Sets up and serves on tray line stations, reading menu, and/or tray tickets and placing food items.
  • -Prepare and assemble nourishments from computer lists.
  • -Sets up and breaks down assigned tray line station during meal service to include cleaning work area and equipment during use and upon completion of assignment.
  • -Cleans and sanitizes equipment using instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • -Make determination on foods to serve for commonly used modified diets to assure meal assembled reflects diet order.
  • -Assembles sandwiches and cold plates for nourishment and meals. Covering, labeling, dating and storing leftovers.
  • -Washes, peels and cuts fruit and vegetables by hand or machine, storing and rotating stock as required.
  • -Maintains food temperatures during meal service and at point of patient delivery according to established procedures.
  • -Maintains an uncluttered, clean and sanitary work area by following the "clean as you go" sanitary food preparation and handling procedures to prevent food borne illness and food contamination.
  • -Identifies discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated on the menu, tray ticket or by the patient preferences.
  • -Answers routine questions and responds to patient-satisfaction issues.
  • -Assist with on-the-job training of lower-grade staff.
  • -Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Various Rotating Shifts - 5:30 a.m. through 8:00 p.m.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent stands and moves about on tile floors for most of tour. Frequently stoops, reaches, lifts or caries food and kitchen equipment. Hand dexterity is necessary in the utilization of machines to prepare foods. May need to lift up to 40 pounds un-assisted or more with assistance.

WORKING CONDITIONS. Must use proper procedures in lifting and moving heavy objects to avoid bruises, strains and other injury. Must be alert to avoid falls on wet floors, burns and scalds from hot foods and equipment, cuts from knives, and other equipment and injury from improper use of chemicals. Must have ability to work rapidly, yet efficiently to meet meal schedules and time frames. Works in areas subject to change in temperature when required to enter refrigerators or freezer. Is required to wear protective clothing provided when entering freezer. Must be neat and clean at all times and follow standard set for proper uniform compliance.
