    Summary

    The Access Board is an independent Federal agency devoted to advancing accessibility and inclusion for all. The Board promotes accessibility through standards and guidelines, education, enforcement, and outreach. It operates with about 30 staff and a governing Board of representatives from Federal departments and public members appointed by the President.

    Responsibilities

    The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
    As an Accessibility Specialist, you will:

    • Formulate and recommend policies and procedures or modifications to existing guidance to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of accessibility guidelines and standards.
    • Conceptualize and develop study plans, conduct fact finding, analyze data, and prepare and present findings and recommendations to determine the adequacy of present systems and to improve accessibility guidelines and standards.
    • Assist the agency in planning, developing, and implementing distance or online learning initiatives on accessible design.
    • Draft clarifications of provisions in the standards and responses to commonly asked questions, identifying best practices, outlining or storyboarding explanatory videos or animations, and providing direction to illustrators and animators.
    • Coordinate the work of the Access Board with codes and standard-setting organizations in the U.S. and abroad through outreach and consultation and by representing the Board on certain standard-setting committees and at various conferences and hearings.
