Duties

Help
  • Apply plastic coating to various items such as rods, drain valves, seat legs, and other similar items.
  • The incumbent will fabricate and/or repair truck tarpaulins, canvas vehicle covers, enclosure curtains, canopies and leather items such as binocular cases, holsters, aiming circles cases and other similar items.
  • Match/assemble individual material pieces to sew exact size and shape making sure that completed work meets requirements for correct shape, good appearance, and durability.
  • Perform minor maintenance to equipment operated such as cleaning lint from bobbin cases, change bobbins, oiling machines, and replace broken needles.
  • Repair and/or fabricates seat cushions, seat covers, crash pads, door panels, and head liners for administrative, tactical or combat vehicles.

This position is a TERM position,Not-To-Exceed one (1) year and one (1) day.
Position is temporary and may be extended up to a maximum of eight (8) years.
This position may be converted to permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met.

To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service. Employee must have a current performance rating at least fully successful or equivalent.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Fabric Worker~ without more than normal supervision. Perform routine repair, fabrication, reclamation, and installation of various items of administrative and combat vehicles. Perform similar duties on non-vehicle type items. Representative Items worked on include, but are not limited to: seat cushions, springs and covers, crash pads, door panels, headliners, truck tarpaulins, canvas covers, enclosure curtains, canopies, binocular cases, holsters, surfboards, flotation barriers, shell racks, ballistic shields and curtains rubber coating, periscope boxes, and fiberglass items. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out


Physical Effort: Fabric workers stand or sit for long periods. There is considerable exertion of arms, shoulder and back muscles in lifting and pulling heavy material across work tables. Frequently handles items weighing 10 - 25 pounds and occasionally is required to lift items in excess of 45 pounds.

Working Conditions: Most of work is performed in shop that is heated, lighted and-ventilated. Occasionally may work outside or in unheated area. May be required to work on ladders and scaffolds when handing or installing completed items. The floor is concrete which is fatigue producing. The shop is noisy making it very difficult to talk above. Incumbent is exposed to the dangers of hand injuries from needles of sewing machines, power shears and other equipment operated. Must wear safety glasses when operating sewing machines and respirators are required when working with fiberglass.???????
