Duties

Help

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of an audiologist at the full performance level, the audiologist at this level is engaged in research activities. Time allocated to research will be determined in accordance with MCM 151-11-0 I Policy for Allocation of Research Time.

Research duties
- Eligible for and seeks funding as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator from VA, NIH, or comparably rigorous intramural or extramural research programs.
- Responsible for formulating or conducting research on problems of considerable scope and complexity.
- Works with substantial freedom and independence in identifying, defining, and selecting problems for study.
- Maintains an active research program with IRB and R&D approved research protocols.
- Mature, competent, and productive as measured by publications and presentations at national scientific meetings.
- Maintains an academic appointment at East Tennessee State University.

Clinic duties:
- Supervises doctoral students in the Audiology clinic.
- The audiologist conducts and coordinates all aspects of diagnostic evaluation and treatment of hearing impairment and/or balance disorders, including the selection and fitting of hearing aids or other amplification devices, aural (auditory) rehabilitation, and counseling of hearing impaired veterans and their families.
- The incumbent serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases and is recognized subject matter expert on matters related to hearing, or tinnitus and balance disorders.
- The incumbent may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/12/2019.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. "Accredited" means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation organization and an audiology program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Licensure. For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website at http://vaww1.va.gov/ohrm/T38Hybrid/HybridOccupations.htm. A staff audiologist who fails to obtain licensure within 2 years of initial appointment under this standard will be terminated. NOTE: The audiologist must maintain full, current, and unrestricted licensure/registration.
  • English language proficiency. Audiologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Preferred Experience: PHD in Audiology

Grade Determinations: In addition to the Basic Requirements, applicants must also meet Grade Requirements as indicated in the qualification standard. The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade. GS-12: Completion of at least 1 year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-12 Audiologist

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-13 LEVEL: Completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-12) and possession of a full current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. Staff audiologists at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of audiology to a wide range of populations.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13

Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting, bending, reaching, stooping, stretching and light lifting (under 15 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); use of fingers; both hands required; repeated bending (.5 hours); near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; hearing with aid. Applicants must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others.
