Duties

Help

  • Sets up and replenishes assigned station on the tray line/cafeteria line with the correct supplies and food items.
  • Incumbent pulls and sets up carts and racks into serving positions on tray assembly line. Selects and places food items on patient trays proceeding down the tray
  • assembly line according to regular or modified diet menus, individual diet cards, or patient selections using menu serving guide, portion control utensils for regular and modified diets, and food safety standards. Identifies, reports, and corrects discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu.
  • Decides what food items to serve for the most common diets such as a liquid diet, sodium restricted diet, or diabetic diet.
  • Breaks down and cleans the station after the serving period.
  • Delivers/retrieves tray to and from the patient's bedsides and/or dining room/day rooms, and to authorized students, residents or guests. Returns to kitchen and retrieves any missed items from patients; trays and delivers to patient. Completes patient satisfaction questionnaires. Carries trays for wheel chair bound patients in dining room. Opens milk and ice cream containers, condiment packets and other food containers for patients upon request.
  • Reports the patient's comments, food acceptance, food consumption, and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian by appropriate mechanism.
  • Reports questions and concerns from the ward staff to the supervisor. Moves food carts from one area to another by manually pushing carts or by means of a motorized vehicle. Incumbent performs routine operator check on vehicle before, during and after each meal service including checking electrical plugs and battery levels. Assure use of chalk blocks when parking for safety. Reports any mechanical malfunctions to supervisor expeditiously.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent is subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, and working on ladders. Incumbent frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Performs work such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils, and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivery supplies. Operates powered cleaning equipment.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
