Duties

Help

This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service at the VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The primary purpose of this position is to transport the Advance Meal Delivery System (AMDS) food cart, server carts, and condiment cards to the patient units, wards, and/or cart docking station.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing uncooked items following simple recipe instructions such as reconstituting fruit gelatin with water, preparing cold sandwiches and packing them with other ready to serve assembled foods for bag meals, and simple diet supplements and tube feedings.
  • Performing heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas, such as cleaning exhaust hoods, cleaning spaces under and behind kitchen equipment including moving the equipment, washing walls and windows, mopping floors, and cleaning walk-in refrigerators and freezers.
  • Pushing tray delivery carts to distribute and collect trays from the bedside and recording information about tray delivery, pick-up and non-delivery.
  • Performing a variety of tasks in the dish room such as scraping trays, sorting, stacking and racking
  • Completing tray preparation with hot beverage and frozen desserts and verifying trays have been properly heated prior to delivery of trays to patients.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/31/2019.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: ONE YEAR SPECIALIZED FOOD SERVICE WORK EXPERIENCE. Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of Food Service related task such as food preparation, delivery of patient trays, proper food selection, set up of cafeteria lines, food service tables and/or buffet tables.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Food Service Worker is subject to continuous standing and walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting or moving objects weighing up to 40 pounds. The Food Service Worker may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies, and may also be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. Duties involve pushing the Advance Meal Delivery System (AMDS) food cart which weighs approximately 500 pounds, which requires 12 pounds of force to initiate movement and 7 pounds of constant force to keep the food card rolling. The Food Service Worker must also push the server cart and/or caddy cart to multiple locations and set up stations for meal service (i.e., buffet, room service, etc.).

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
