Mission Statement: The Joint Staff assists the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in accomplishing his responsibilities for: the unified strategic direction of the combatant forces; their operation under unified command; and for their integration into an efficient team of land, naval, and air forces. The Joint Staff is composed of approximately equal numbers of officers from the Army, Navy and Marine Corps, and Air Force. In practice, the Marines make up about 20 percent of the number allocated to the Navy.
The Africa Political Military Planner is located within the Joint Staff Strategy, Plans and Policy Directorate (J-5), Deputy Directorate for Politico-Military Affairs-Africa. The Incumbent Serves as Africa Political Military Planner within one of the Regional Divisions: North & West and East, Central and South Africa Division and is responsible for providing advice and expertise on politico-military issues concerning the region(s) encompassing Africa within the U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) area of responsibility (AOR) and assisting in the formulation of CJCS positions on related policy and strategy issues. Additionally, the incumbent must be prepared to assume leadership of either division Chief and be responsible for developing and coordinating U.S. military policy with other interagency organizations, CCMD, and the Military Services.
