Duties

Help

Incumbent is a food service worker in a hospital kitchen performing duties that require knowledge of food service operations and food delivery systems including basic food preparation, tray delivery and pickup, ware washing, and sanitation. Delivers and retrieves meal trays and carts at either division. Sets up and operates a dishwasher and trash pulping extractor. Performs work on tray assembly line placing items on patient trays according to patient diet orders. Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas such as cleaning spaces under and behind kitchen equipment, washing walls, sweeping and mopping floors, stairwells, and elevators. Work requires entry into refrigerators and freezers to obtain work materials. Work requires constant walking, standing, bending, stooping, and pushing and pulling heavy loads. Moderate lifting of up to 50 pounds. Pushing carts weighing up to 575 pounds.

Work Schedule: 4:30 pm-7:30 pm; 4:45 pm-7:30 pm; 4:15 pm-7:30 pm; alternating weekends; Holidays

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Heavy Lifting (30 to 45 lbs); Heavy Carrying (30 to 45 lbs); Pushing, pulling up to 450 pounds; continuous walking, standing, bending, lifting, stooping, reaching, and grasping. The work is performed in the kitchen area where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often causes uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities and there is danger of slipping on floors. Workers are exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, and hot working surfaces. Hands are continuously in water and detergent. Some workers are exposed to extreme temperature changes of the hot kitchen and the cold walk-in refrigerators/freezers. Protective equipment may be provided in these areas as well. Workers are frequently exposed to contagious diseases in tray delivery, soiled tray pick-up, and dishwashing activities.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
