Summary

The primary purpose of the Food Service Worker (FSW) is to provide quality care and service. The FSW must be always motivated and committed to providing high quality food service which meets all food safety requirements, provides the highest level of customer service, and promotes and enforces the policies and procedures of NFS and the medical center. The FSW works a variety of shifts, and may be required to work on weekends and holidays.

Duties

Help

Duties include, but not limited to the following:
  • Perform regular and heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas including operating mechanical dishwashers;
  • Perform simple food preparation such as fresh fruit, green salads, cold sandwiches, etc.;
  • Ensure food is stored and handled safely according to standard operation procedures;
  • Assemble individual and bulk nourishments and deliver ward stock to each unit as indicated;
  • Select and place food items on patient trays as they proceed down the tray assembly line according to specification on tray tickets;
  • Serve food to patients at bedside and pick up trays when patients are finished eating;
  • Serve food to cafeteria customers by setting up serving areas, assembling sample plates, portioning and serving food and drinks, ensuring proper sanitation and food handling practices and operating the beverage dispensing machines;
  • Assist with receiving and storing food and supplies.
Work Schedule: Varied, to be determine by supervisor.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The Food Service Worker at this grade level performs work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, and bending. The FSW may also be required to work for long periods using repetitive motion, especially in the Sanitation and Trayline areas. They frequently lift or move objects and push/pull carts weighing (or requiring the force of) up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of other workers. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing pots, pans or other food service equipment. The WG-2 FSW working in the Ingredient Control unit will push heavy carts and trucks during unloading, storing, and delivering food and supplies, and will regularly lift or move objects over 40 pounds with the assistance of pallet jacks or other workers. To minimize risk of work-related injury, the WG-2 FSW adheres to safe, ergonomic work practices, including bending at knees to lift, pushing (not pulling) carts or other equipment, use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all established safety standards.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. Other areas are kept cool to assure food is assembled under appropriate conditions to assure food safety. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Regularly exposed to hot food and liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot and cold working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
