Duties

Help

The incumbent of this position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of fixed equipment as well as scientific equipment such as equipment and systems utilized in maintaining environmental control.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Servicing all air conditioning and refrigeration condensing units, compressors, evaporators, blowers, and all associated controls.
  • Servicing and inspecting oil/gas fired low pressure boilers for proper pressures, water temperatures, combustion efficiency.
  • Troubleshooting and maintaining various laboratory equipment and appliances, i.e. environmental growth chambers, mixers, sterilizers, ovens, electronic air cleaners, auto transformers, dishwashers, water distillation units, mixed bed demineralization systems and garbage disposal units.
  • Maintaining plumbing in and around building.
  • Performing minor repairs, tune-ups and preventive maintenance on various farm tractors, gasoline powered lawn mowers, edgers, lawn sweepers, and related equipment.
  • Maintaining building electrical and lighting systems.

Successful completion of one year probationary period.

Physical Effort

While working alone or assisting other mechanics, performs requiring considerable physical exertion at times, such as lighting and carrying heavy units and the disassembly of these units. Work is frequently performed on concrete floors and often in cramped quarters. Considerable standing, crouching, stooping, and kneeling is typical. 

Working Conditions

Primarily the work is done indoors, however, occasionally the incumbent is exposed to fumes, mud, dampness, and cold. The climbing of ladders, on and around equipment and on roofs of buildings is a necessity.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic WG-4749-10, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Managements (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
