Duties

Help

Major duties include, but are not limited to;

  • Measuring, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute items and ability to perform brick laying, plumbing, painting, electrical wiring, and landscaping duties.
  • Modifying and building wood, wood substitutes, frame structures, shelving, decking, tiles, glass, and widows.
  • Repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures, and HVAC systems including Co-Ray-Vac heating system.
  • Maintaining irrigation systems, pumps, lift stations, and underground pipelines, and water units.
  • Repairing and replacing wiring, circuit breakers, switches, and faulty components.
  • Using hand and power tools including hammers, pliers, electrical saws, tractors, forklifts, and back hoes.
  • Reading blueprints, manuals, and technical guides.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
The work requires frequent light to heavy physical effort such as lifting or carrying objects of about 10 to 40 pounds and occasionally objects over 50 pounds. The work may require continual exertion in walking, bending, stooping, reaching, etc. The work can also require strain related to lack of movement such as standing, crouching, or stooping for extended periods of time.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work indoors is subject to poor lighting, heating, and ventilation at times. Work outdoors is subject to uncomfortable weather conditions such as wind, sun, snow, rain, sunburn, or frostbite.

Temperatures outdoors often hinders working there, but it may be necessary so that the research center can remain operational. Temperature for indoor work areas is generally, but not always, comfortable. The incumbent will be subject to dusty conditions brought about by sawdust or accumulated dirt, dust, etc.

Noise and vibration levels are usually relatively low in most areas, except the main carpenter shop where the power equipment is located and ear plugs must be used. Gases and fumes will be noticeable at times from gluing, painting, and cleaning.

Incumbent should see that ventilation is provided at these times . The incumbent will be required to work at various heights, such as on roofs, scaffolding, ladders, etc. At times the incumbent is in danger of injury from splinters or flying wood chips, cuts from various hand and power tools.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Carpenter, WG-4067-07;08, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Managements (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

    • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision

    • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
    • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
