Cartographic Technicians perform limited drafting and mapping work involving a variety of basic cartographic methods. Duties may include but are not limited to:
Prepares and digitizes data sets, maps, and charts.
Modifies maps using Geographical Information System (GIS)
Performs quality control to reduce digitizing errors and makes minor revisions to fit imagery or to correct problems created in the scanning or rectification processes.
Provides assistance to other staff members in creating, editing, and correcting digital map information.
Duties for this position are mostly sedentary; however, some lifting, bending, and carrying are required to move and service equipment, handle source materials and supplies. Work requires a marked degree of hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and concentration and involves regular and recurring periods of prolonged sitting at drafting light tables, digitizing tables, and computer work stations. Work is performed in an office or similar setting but may require some field work where there may be exposure to rain, heat, and cold.
Security Clearance/Background Investigation is required.
You cannot hold an active real estate license, nor can you have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Land.

Qualifications
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirement. Please be sure to include this information in your resume.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include compiling information from specified sources. Assembling and sorting material into a complete map. Researching office records for ownership status, cadastral survey grid layout and land classifications for display on maps; OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (180 quarter or 120 semester hours) that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences, e.g., physical geography or geodesy. Examples of acceptable courses include cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
This position may require the operation of a motor vehicle on both public and private roads during daylight hours and occasionally after dark. A valid state driver's license is required.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
