Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Agroecosystems Management Research Unit, located in Ames, IA.

The incumbent of this position will serve as a research technician in agricultural systems and environmental quality programs that address the interactions of hydrologic processes, water quality, and cropping systems.

Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Collecting, preparing and evaluating the following types of samples: soil; water; plant; and air.
  • Investigating hydrologic, water quality, and crop responses to different land use practices, soils, and climate.
  • Keeping exact and detailed records of data obtained from experiments.
  • Performing routine and recurring field, lab, and computer modeling studies of the interaction between hydrology, water quality, climate, soil, and land use.
  • Using the following instruments or tools to obtain, analyze and summarize data/samples: spreadsheets (Excel); programming languages (Python, SQL, C, Visual Basic); statistical software (SAS, R, SPSS); and agricultural, ecological or hydrological related computer models.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-05:

Qualifying experience for the GS-05 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in conducting research related to agriculture, hydrology, soil or water quality; preparing samples from water or soil for research purposes; and keeping records of experimental data.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-06:

Qualifying experience for the GS-06 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting and measuring water or soil samples in support of a hydraulic, soil or water quality research project; utilizing computer modeling to predict water and chemical movement across watersheds; keeping records of experimental data; and assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment process.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Physical Sciences; Chemistry; Biochemistry; Agricultural Sciences; Mathematics; Computer Science; and Hydrology.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
