The mission of the Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research Unit is to anticipate needs, develop knowledge, and provide technological solutions to optimize agricultural production systems, at the sub-field to watershed scale, for both economic and environmental sustainability.

Duties

Help

The incumbent of this position will actively participate in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory environment, common to the assigned area of work, and contributes ideas towards the planning and execution of the technical aspects of the research.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Collect, prepare, evaluate and verify environmental samples and supporting records.
  • Search for literature pertinent to agronomy, soil science, and natural resources management for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.
  • Adapt, modify or develop new techniques or procedures to satisfy the needs of a research project.
  • Tabulate, statistically analyze and summarize data using personal computers and software packages.
  • Maintain, calibrate and modify complex or specialized laboratory equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires some physical exertions, such as regular and recurring walking or bending.  In many situations the duration of the activity (e.g., continuous testing of samples) contributes to the arduous nature of the job.  In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work requires moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, machines, with irritant chemicals, bacteria, or obnoxious odors.  The incumbent is required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-8:

Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in research projects that included collecting, evaluating and verifying environmental samples (soil, plants, water, and air); operating research equipment or remote sensing instruments; using statistical analysis techniques to analyze data; and assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures for the analysis of environmental samples.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master’s degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees include chemistry, soil science, natural resource management, hydrology, geology, environmental sciences, plant physiology, or agronomy.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.

At the GS-9:

Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-8 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in all phases of research projects that included collecting, evaluating and verifying environmental samples (soil, plants, water, and air); operating research equipment or remote sensing instruments; using statistical analysis techniques to analyze data; assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures for the analysis of environmental samples; and preparing scientific results for presentation or publication.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master’s degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees include chemistry, soil science, natural resource management, hydrology, geology, environmental sciences, or agronomy.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.
