Duties

  • Duties listed are at the full performance level.
  • Conducts complex studies and investigations to determine the impact of various disturbances or factors, on ecosystems and their components.
  • Plans projects or environmental activities; independently organizes and coordinates work details and carries out assigned tasks on approved research studies.
  • Selects and installs sample plots to properly represent the research objectives with minimal guidance.
  • Constructs maps and perform basic spatial analyses in ArcView software.
  • Operates and maintains field environment analytical equipment and makes modifications to a variety of hydrological, meteorological, biological, and analytical instruments.
  • Identifies herbaceous, shrub, and tree species of northern forests using botanical keys.
  • Performs advanced laboratory analyses and culture collection maintenance.
  • Manages day-to-day activities in experimental Mesocosm and Rhizotron facilities.
  • Performs statistical analyses of data collected, using appropriate procedures

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Basic Education Requirement for Ecology Series, GS-0408:
Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences.
These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess specialized experience and/or directly related graduate education in the amounts listed below.

GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 7 level in the federal service. Specialized experience at this level is defined as conducting field sampling and laboratory analyses to assess effects of environmental change on terrestrial biogeochemical or microbial processes with oversight from senior personnel; using a variety of statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, Sigmaplot, Qiime) to assist in analyzing these data (e.g., using regression, mixed models, bioinformatics, multivariate analyses) under the supervision of senior personnel; writing a report summarizing the outcomes of the study and statistical analysis (preferably a peer reviewed scientific paper) under supervision of senior personnel.
-OR- a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if directly related to the work of the position in fields such as advanced biostatistics (multiple regression, generalized linear models, mixed models, multivariate analysis; course in R or SAS); environmental microbiology; mycology; molecular methods for environmental science or ecology; biogeochemistry or soil chemistry; ecosystem science.
-OR- a combination of specialized experience and education described above. Only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 9 level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as designing studies, and conducting field sampling and laboratory analyses to assess effects of environmental change on terrestrial biogeochemical or microbial processes; independently using a variety of software (e.g., R, SAS, Sigmaplot, Qiime) for statistical analysis and visualization of these data (e.g., using regression, mixed models, bioinformatics, multivariate analyses); independently writing a formal report (preferably a peer reviewed scientific paper) summarizing the outcomes of the study and statistical analysis;
-OR- 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled) in fields such as advanced biostatistics (multiple regression, generalized linear models, mixed models, multivariate analysis; course in R or SAS or python); environmental microbiology; mycology; molecular methods for environmental science or ecology; biogeochemistry or upper level soil chemistry; ecosystem science and field methods for ecosystem science; bioinformatics, metatranscriptomics, metagenomics; data management or data science.
-OR-an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above. Only graduate education beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e. more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D, may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
