Conducts laboratory and field experiments to discover and identify new biologically active natural or synthetic products that can be useful in monitoring or managing economically important arthropods
Develop and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPS) for use by others.
Performs operation, routine care, maintenance and calibration of moderately complex laboratory and field instruments and equipment.
Writes periodic laboratory and field reports including discussion on experiment design, principle, procedure and results.
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Subject to satisfactory completion of one year probationary period.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.
Basic Requirements:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a degree in the fields of physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes: planning and performing chemical and behavioral experiments for research programs focused to protect people from disease pathogens of insect pests and newly-introduced invasive species; providing technical guidance to assigned support staff during research; collecting accurate and valid data from samples and experiments; operating, calibrating and modifying complex laboratory equipment; and researching and writing laboratory reports that discuss experimental progress, procedures and results.
OR
Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Entomology, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, Zoology, Genetics or Physiology or related field of study.
OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.
