Duties

The Information & Customer Services Branch (ICSB) provides national and international leadership in the provision of and access to agricultural and related scientific and technical information in specialized subject matter areas to a wide range of national and international customers including scientists, educators, policy makers, public officials, business and industry, farmers and the general public.

The incumbent will provide direct and indirect services to NAL and its partners, ARS, and USDA personnel, researchers, scholars, and the public by representing the National Agricultural Library food safety program to a variety of national and international organizations and- institutions in a professional and knowledgeable manner.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Leader and team leaders in developing the library's collection in the specialized fields relating to food safety.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current and projected developments in food safety information and the information sciences.
  • Collecting, organizing, and making available scientific research and technical information on the program.
  • Analyzing research and literature for trends in specific topical areas within food safety, in order to enhance existing online products, and envision new products and services.
  • Developing backgrounders and informational and guidance documents for a variety of food safety research topics (e.g., FSMA, Chemical Contaminants, Biotechnology, Antimicrobial Resistance, Food Allergens, Produce Safety).
  • Accessing scientific database tools to compile food safety research.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

In order to be found minimally qualified, you must meet both the following basic education requirement AND the specialized experience requirement.

Basic Requirements:

To qualify at the 1412 series:

A full 4-year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with major study in agriculture, biological or physical sciences.

OR

Four years of experience that provided a knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, and terminology in an agriculture, biological or physical sciences field; an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in the subject-matter field. Such experience must have been equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4-year college curriculum.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience:
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for the GS-12 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and operations related to food safety; reviewing projects and studies; analyzing research and literature for trends in specific topical areas within food safety; and managing reference services for food and nutrition programs utilizing online reference systems.
