Duties

Help

As a Research Geologist (Climate Change) within the Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serves as a technical expert in using biomarkers, such as levoglucosan and fecal sterols, in ice and sediment cores to determine the timing and interpretation of climate and human events related to fire.
  • Develops project plans, research objectives, assessment of research progress, and effective communication of research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, at scientific meetings and informal meetings.
  • Prepares descriptive and interpretive scientific reports on the results of research activities for USGS publication and administrative use.
  • Works directly and responsibly with scientists of other federal and state agencies and universities on technical issues related to the research assignment.
  • Operates a government motor vehicle on a regular and recurrent basis to conduct field work.

Physical Demands:

Work may include periodic work in laboratories requiring adherence to standard laboratory practices and safety procedures and potentially long periods of standing.

Work Environment:

Field work is conducted outdoors and may involve physically strenuous activity under adverse weather conditions including heat, rain, cold and snow. Field work is often physically challenging requiring hiking long distances over difficult terrain and exposure to dangerous weather conditions and unpredictable wildlife.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possession of a valid state driver's license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide both of these.
  • This position requires completion of a medical examination at Federal expense.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

  1. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

**OR

  1. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirement described above, in order to qualify, you must also meet the following selective placement factor:

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: The incumbent is a technical expert in using biomarkers, such as levoglucosan and fecal sterols, in ice and sediment cores to determine the timing and interpretation of climate and human events related to fire.

In addition to the basic education requirement and selective factor as stated above, you must also meet one of the following to qualify at the GS-12 level:

--one year of appropriate professional research experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning and executing complex geologic studies, involving developing project plans, research objectives, assessment of research progress, and effective oral and published written communication of research results. The work of this position requires knowledge of the principles and techniques for using biomarkers to help determine the timing and interpretation of climate and human events related to fire, and experience in their application through detailed stratigraphic and chronologic investigations of ice and sediment cores, and analysis of chemical, isotopic, and/or physical data using existing techniques and developing new approaches and methods as needed.

OR

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study.

OR

A combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.

Research experience is defined as: Experience which has involved scientific inquiry or investigation and has shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research. The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of research or providing the means of exploring the application of science in a major area.
