Duties

Help

This position is located in the Transportation section at the VA Medical center in Los Angeles, CA.

  • Applies experience using patience, consideration and good judgment while transporting patients.
  • Works cooperatively with other personnel regarding the transportation of patients.
  • Drives in congested traffic in major cities transporting patients to other medical facilities and/or picking up or delivering records, x-rays, supplies, equipment and other items.
  • Performs minor vehicle maintenance on all vehicles.
  • Performs daily inspections of each vehicle and equipment prior to use.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regular established scheduled over improved or unimproved roads.
  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles including sedans, station wagons, mini and passenger vans, ambulance, 18 passenger van, rubbish truck.
  • Plans routes to ensure safe transportation of passengers.
  • Performs other duties assigned as it relates to the position.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications


To Qualify for this position you must have knowledge of vehicles equipped with special-purpose accessory equipment. know how to use the power devices that operate van lifts and skill in manipulating a variety of controls and understanding equipment gauges, engine fluid level instruments and warning signals. At this grade level, drivers know how to operate vehicles that are larger and longer than those driven at the lower grade level. You must also possess a valid state driver's license class B (CDL) with passenger endorsement.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS:
The Motor Vehicle Operators will exert light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. They exert moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Moderate physical effort is required in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads or larger number of people. Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout a Government installation or establishment. Drivers are exposed to fumes and dirt, and to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or falling objects when loading and unloading. Employee will drive in heavy urban to rural traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
