Summary

As Supervisory Content Editor within VOA's News Center, the incumbent will have the responsibility for actively participating and leading a team of professional editors and reporters, developing and writing unique and original stories of global interest for foreign audiences on a variety of issues. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for reporting on current news stories with accuracy consistent with the mission and function of VOA and journalistic standards.

Duties

Help

This position coordinates multi story arcs that involve reporting around the United States on specific themes or topics such as religion, elections or national security. This reporting may result in special web pages that will involve complex infographics, highly visual character-driven storytelling, and pieces that contextualize the issues for an international audience as well as content for broadcast and affiliates.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership on a multitude of on-going major, complex, subject matter projects as well as developing and breaking news for all platforms on local, national, and international levels.
  • Supervising a team of writers and editors to include assigning work, preparing performance appraisals, identifying training needs; interviewing and selecting individuals for vacant positions, dealing with employee concerns, effecting minor disciplinary actions, and performing other equivalent supervisory tasks.
  • Responsible for all aspects of content, which includes the development, design, production, presentation, evaluation, and analysis, to name a few, of all materials.
  • Ensuring writers and reporters provide unbiased reporting and utilizes appropriate reporting tools to include analysis of documents and developments, which are accurate, balanced, and comprehensive.
  • Collaborating and coordinating with news managers, producers, reporters, and stakeholders developing and delivering substantive stories that go beyond the surface of basic facts.
  • Responsible for the technical adequacy, accuracy, and practicability of all work emanating from reporters and is authorized to make final decisions on content of materials and information to be disseminated.
  • Ensuring topics and issues provide the depth and breadth of scrutiny and probing to provide and expose that which was intended to remain undisclosed.
  • Planning, developing, and implementing program strategies for major projects related to the mission and function of VOA.
  • Training and mentoring reporters, producers, and editors providing support and guidance; and conducting workshops for other VOA journalists to teach useful reporting techniques.

Qualifications

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13), which is directly related to this line of work.

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and MUST be addressed in the application in order to be considered:

  • Experience in content editing, i.e., checking for factual errors, contradictions, and/or inconsistencies.
  • Experience leading in-depth news reports and special projects in a multi-platform environment shaping, guiding, reporting, and telling reputable, balanced, unbiased, comprehensive, and compelling stories.
  • Experience leading the production/creation of content in a multi-platform environment such as radio, TV, digital, and social media (i.e., Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
  • Experience in international and national journalism laws, ethics, and practices.
  • Experience supervising a team of writers, editors, and reporters and training and mentoring them, providing support and guidance regarding useful reporting and content editing techniques.
