Duties

Help
  • Sweeps, mops, strips, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors using brooms, mops, industrial-type floor scrubbers and other heavy powered cleaning equipment
  • Adjusts, changes and performs minor maintenance on buffers, brushes and other attachments on power equipment
  • Dusts, waxes and polishes office furniture, table tops, desks, chairs, lighting fixtures, windows, window ledges and woodwork
  • Maintains restrooms in clean and sanitary condition. Cleans and disinfects lavatories, urinals, toilet bowls, sinks, etc.
  • Cleans and maintains walls, carpets and ceiling surfaces. Removes stains from a variety of surfaces
  • Occasionally works on ladders/scaffolds to clean and/or replace ceiling fixtures, walls, replace light bulbs and other similar tasks
  • Works outside for general maintenance activities, (picking up debris, minimal landscaping, cleaning outsides of windows)
  • Sets up and takes down cafeteria tables, chairs and trash cans
  • Cleans cafeteria eating areas before during and after breakfast and lunch periods (cleans tables, empties trays, cleans floors, etc.). Also sets up and takes down furniture and A/V equipment for special events and assemblies.
  • Opens and closes schools

  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Requirement.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Direct deposit of pay is required.
  • Two year trial or probationary period may be required.
  • Appointment subject to a suitability /fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
  • This position requires a Tier 1 (T1) investigation with Childcare Checks since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Custodial Worker without more than normal supervision. performing cleaning duties to include mopping, dusting, and disinfecting lavatories and perform general grounds keeping maintenance to include landscaping and snow removal. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Physical Effort: Occasionally uses heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., industrial type buffers). Occasionally experts moderately heavy physical effort such as that required in lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50-pounds, requiring continuous standing, bending, stooping and reaching. Requires working on ladders/scaffold in the performance of some duties.

Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas which are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritation from strong cleaning solutions. Care must be taken to avoid serious injury when working on ladders and scaffolds or when using heavy powered equipment.

In accordance with the Delegated Examining Unit Handbook, Chapter 6-A-10, this position is restricted to preference eligibles only.
