Duties

Help

As News Chief, serves as the editorial subject matter expert communicating the importance and relevance of scientific and engineering endeavors through the media. Writes/edits information that will engage the public. Manages and approves all materials submitted for publication. Identifies opportunities for leveraging external communication and media opportunities to spotlight and facilitate the exchange of information from Goddard's research communities to targeted external audiences. Modifies/develops new methods of presenting information to maximize coverage and visibility of Agency projects and programs.

Serves as the administrative and technical lead of a team responsible for program and project development; implementation and evaluation, audience research; translation and dissemination; and management of national or international communication. Leads the team through group facilitation, coordination, coaching, problem solving, interpersonal communication, integration of work processes and products, obtaining resources and liaison with the supervisor. Approves leave, resolves simple employee complaints, and provides input into performance evaluations.

Plans and directs all phases of the Center's news, web and social media products, as well as crisis and non-crisis news events. Leads efforts to select the most effective communication style and methodology to translate complicated scientific information to be disseminated to agency stakeholders, such as the general public, members of the news and social media, scientific and professional organizations, international and trade organizations and/or others with a high interest in NASA. Ensures the language of highly technical material has been adjusted and is suitable for understanding by wide audiences. Reviews all publications before release for conformance with agency and current Federal policies. Oversees the quality, quantity and production flow of informational materials, and integrates them into the Center's and agency's communication processes.

As a senior communications advisor, provides consultation to management on best practices for garnering coverage and visibility of NASA's projects, people and programs. Arranges briefings, news conferences and interviews with NASA Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and develops communication plans, coordinates information programs, prepares SMEs for interviews and oversees the visual documentation of operations and activities. Serves as an official NASA spokesperson and coordinates the handling of queries from community organizations and the public about Agency activities that could significantly affect public opinion.

Leads and conducts research and evaluation activities related to news media, social media and Internet/web communications. Evaluates the impacts of communications products and activities and develops recommendations on how to improve their effectiveness. Determines project goals and objectives and ensures appropriate technologies and tools are applied to ensure project success. Reviews and evaluates existing strategies and communication plans for disseminating information about a wide variety of agency programs.

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is working in the news industry or related professional communications field managing teams and integrating communications products and activities into strategic communications plans and events for external communication campaigns; providing expertise on a broad range of communications methods including news, social media, and tv and video production; and, interpreting and presenting technical information about topics in science, technology, and/or engineering fields.
