Summary

This position is in the Smithsonian Latino Center (SLC), Smithsonian Institution (SI) located in Washington, DC.  The incumbent serves as the Public Affairs Specialist, works under the supervision of the SLC Director, and is responsible for publicity, promotion, and marketing of the Latino Center and its exhibitions and programs (including social media and website management).

Duties

Help

  • Responds in oral and written forms to requests for information from members of the public, private organizations, media representatives, Smithsonian’s Office of Communications and External Affairs, and other Smithsonian units.  Gathers information and procures materials and/or produces customized materials, as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains relations with new media representatives and representatives of specials constituent organizations.  Writes and edits center publications including newsletter, quarterly reports, and annual reports.  Conducts marketing and media industry research, as necessary.
  • Develops SLC’s social media plan and calendar.  Attends and facilitates live-tweeting and live streaming at SLC-produced and co-sponsored programs.  Achieves all SLC social media communications.
  • Works closely with SLC’s New Media Director in maintaining and updating front-end website content, transitioning to bilingual website, and collaborating on future website redesign.  Coordinates with center program directors and assistants and advancement staff to ensure timely updates.

Experience:

You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience communicating with print ad broadcast media, maintaining relationships with local and national media, coordinating social media in a major media market, developing information and promotional documents and briefing leadership on media initiatives and opportunities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education:

Master's or equivalent graduate degree

or

2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

or

LL.B. or J.D., if related

Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.

Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

Or a Combination:

Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of communications and public information principles, concepts, research, methods, and practices.

  2. Knowledge of written bilingual (English-Spanish) communication.

  3. Ability to develop materials conveying information about the center’s exhibitions and programs.

  4. Skill in bilingual (English-Spanish) oral communication.

  5. Skill in social media planning, implementation, administration and coordination, and posting (including live-tweeting and live-streaming documentation).

  6. Knowledge of website maintenance and updating.
