Duties

Help

This position is located in Nutrition and Food Service at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. As a Food Service Worker, you will perform duties that require proficiency in special procedures and a broad knowledge of service operations, such as food preparation, dish washing, dry and refrigerated storage and food and beverage serving. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Performs general cleaning of the floors, walls, ledges, and equipment. Delimes the dish machine and works with chemicals (referring to the Material Data sheets).

* Performs detailed, specific cleaning of equipment (large and small).

* Sets up and operates pot washing: scrapes, soaks, scours and scrubs the heavier cooking utensils.

* Portions food items (gelatins, juices and desserts) into standing serving sizes using proper utensils and containers.

* Sets up and operates a mechanical dishwasher. Removes and inspects doors, strainer pans, screens and spray arms for preventative maintenance and cleaning.

* Sets up and operates pot washing: scrapes, soaks, scours and scrubs the heavier cooking utensils.

* Working knowledge of appropriate use of chemicals (how to safely mix/use/store).

* Deliver/pickup of patient trays at bedside

Work schedule: Full-time: Two shifts available: 6:00am - 2:30pm and/or 11:30am - 8:00pm, with rotating days off, works weekends (Saturday and Sunday), and holidays. Part-time: 15 hours per week: 7:00am - 10:00am and/or 4:30pm - 7:30pm.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Performs some work requiring light to moderate physical effort. Subject to continuous standing, walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-sized cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. May be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. Frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
