Applicants for this position must currently reside and attend school in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. For the purpose of cooperative education positions, this is defined as living within a 70 mile radius of Washington, DC
The position will serve in the Defender Services Office (DSO). The DSO administers the Federal appointed counsel program consisting of Federal public defenders; community defenders organizations and private panel attorneys. The Defender Services program operates pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act (CJA),18U.S.C.§3006A. The incumbent of this position will report to the Chief of the Administrative Operations Staff. The Administrative Operations Staff (AOS) provides administrative, logistical, financial and technical support for the Defender Services Office.
The duties of the position may include, but are not be limited to, the following
1. Analyzing and applying travel policy for all travel and financial related duties;
2. Researching anomalies and working with stakeholders in the agency to find solutions;
3. Developing weekly, quarterly and year-end reports at the direction of program managers;
4. Researching and compiling financial data for review by DSO managers;
5. Reconciling invoices monthly;
6. Training staff on the use of the judiciary travel system;
7. Answering questions from internal and external travelers related to travel funding and policy;
8. Processing, preparing and monitoring travel authorizations and vouchers for external travelers;
9. Identifying and tracking problems related to internal and external travel and seeking solutions;
10. Assisting the travel service liaison with travel related problems;
11. Reviewing ticket notification emails to ensure that tickets are being issued in accordance with the Travel Authorizations and the Judiciary travel policies;
12. Creating obligations in the judiciary financial management system for external travel expenses, to include training staff on the creation of various kinds of obligations related to external travelers;
13. Various projects/tasks as assigned, including filing invoices, authorizations and contracts.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
School Affiliation: All students in the Co-op program must be enrolled in an accredited school, and must be working toward a degree, diploma, certificate, etc. on a full or part-time basis. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. You can receive credit for education received outside the United States if you provide evidence that it is comparable to an accredited educational institution in the United States. Transcripts are required to apply for this position.

The Administrative Office (AO), an agency of the Judicial Branch of the Federal government, is committed to serving and supporting the Federal court system of the United States. The AO provides a broad range of legislative, legal, financial, technology, management, administrative and program support services to the Federal courts.
OPPORTUNITY : The AO is seeking applicants for the Cooperative Education Program (Co-op). The opportunity is intended to provide valuable work experience for students interested in a public service career. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level program. The student will have an opportunity to improve his or her writing, research, analytical, logical, multi-tasking, and customer-service skills. Students are expected to work 20 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week (full-time) during the summer. Students will be appointed on a temporary basis with the duration to be determined based on the academic program. Upon graduation and successful completion of academic requirements, the AO may non-competitively convert a Co-op student to a permanent appointment.
