Duties

Help

As a CONSERVATOR (EXHIBITS), GS-1001-13, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Serve as a team leader or staff technical expert responsible for planning and providing ad hoc and recurring preservation and conservation activities for Research Services and in some instances for the agency, including analyzing, reviewing, and making recommendations to office management regarding NARA preservation and conservation policy, programs, and procedures in areas that have organization-wide, agency-wide, or in some cases, government-wide and professional impacts. Lead teams, composed of staff from within RXC, RX, and R and from other NARA components, as appropriate, in projects of considerable complexity and broad scope. Independently plan and coordinate the team's efforts, and serve as the chief conservator in carrying out assigned projects.
  • Serve as a NARA technical expert in one or more of the following areas: conservation methodology and treatment of archival artifacts, conservation and preservation training of division staff and allied professionals, development of preservation based standards for archival activities, preservation requirements for exhibition of archival materials, and preservation requirements for digitization of archival records.
  • Regularly conduct or participate in the examination, and when appropriate, treatment of the rarest and most complex documents in any of the National Archives holdings. Document the condition, including the extent of damage, degree, and state of deterioration of records; the causes of damage such as inherent vice, exposure to light, improper handling or housing; and previous remedial treatment such as mends, fills, reinforcement, etc. Tests to determine the records reaction to potential treatment and to determine the most effective approaches to treatment. Decisions made involve consideration of unusual circumstances, variations in approach and incomplete data. Develop new approaches to treatments to assure both safest and most effective treatment of documents.
  • Coordinate with archival staff to assure that preservation approaches are consistent with the significance, and future use and storage of records. Present treatment plans to appropriate custodians for approval, and confers with custodians during the course of treatment as often as necessary to assure consistent appropriate treatment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirements:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to analyze, review and make recommendations to management regarding agency preservation and conservation policy, programs, and procedures affecting the exhibition or loan of museum objects or archival records with office/agency wide impact; develop and review proposals for policy and implementation in conservation processes for museum objects or archival records; develop preservation-based standards for exhibition or loan activities; conduct training and making oral presentations on the conservation aspects of the loan or exhibition of museum objects or archival records; and knowledge of preservation requirements for the exhibition and loan of museum objects and archival records.
