This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Agricultural Systems Research Unit, located in Sidney, MT.
The incumbent of this position will support a Research Soil Scientist on the evaluation of management practices on soil carbon and nitrogen cycling, greenhouse gas emissions, and crop yields and quality in dryland and irrigated cropping systems.
Summary

The incumbent of this position will support a Research Soil Scientist on the evaluation of management practices on soil carbon and nitrogen cycling, greenhouse gas emissions, and crop yields and quality in dryland and irrigated cropping systems.
Managing the field experiment by collecting, preparing and evaluating the following types of samples: gas; soil; plant; and water.
Assisting with analysis of data and data management.
Keeping detailed records of data obtained from experiments.
Maintaining, calibrating and modifying complex/specialized laboratory equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
Using the following equipment to obtain, analyze and summarize data/samples: Gas Chromatographs; Elementars; LECOs; Auto-analyzers; Soil sampling hydraulic probes; and Calcimeters.
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Subject to satisfactory completion of a one year probationary period.
Appropriate trainings to operate the equipment will be provided.

For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to soil, plant or environmental science; assisting with the maintenance and operation of specialized farming and laboratory equipment; and keeping records of experimental data.

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Soil Science and Environmental Science.

At the GS-08:
Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a biological science research project which includes collecting, evaluating and verifying plant, soil, or gas samples; maintaining and operating specialized farming and laboratory equipment; keeping records of experimental data; and assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures within the experimental process.

Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Soil Science and Environmental Science.
