Duties

Help

These positions are within the Dental Service and must have the ability to understand, interpret and follow the dentist's prescriptions, and the ability to work to very exacting specifications and extremely close tolerances. Some of the duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Adapts existing guidelines in order to carry out duties to adapt to a variety of clinical circumstances.
  • Surveys master casts for partial dentures, setups and contours artificial teeth.
  • Performs a variety of specialty laboratory procedures that require consideration of detailed aspects of each patient's dental anatomy.
  • Surveys, interprets designs and fabricates fixed, semi-fixed removable dentures or completed dentures.
  • Constructs porcelain or acrylic fixed or semi-fixed bridge restorations, full or removable partial dentures or orthodontic appliances and dental splints and obturators.
  • Fabricates acrylic or cast splints for the reduction of fixation of maxillary and mandibular fractures, and obturators.
  • Other duties as assigned.?

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position.

AND

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: MUST
one (1) year of specialized experience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the Dental Laboratory Technician. To be creditable, this experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; construction of dental prosthetic appliances. In addition to the experience referenced above, you may also possess the following experience: Experience using dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; Using laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; Using precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; Constructing dental prosthetic appliances. (This experience must be documented in your resume.)

EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: MUST
have successfully completed one and a half (1 1/2) years of graduate level education or an internship that is directly related to the position at the next lower grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: MUST
possess equivalent combinations of education and experience, as described above, to meet the requirements for this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Physical Requirements: Long periods of standing, sitting and bending are required. It is necessary to climb onto counters in order to replenish plaster bins. The ability to lift plaster boxes weighing 30 pounds from the floor to the counter to the plaster bins is required.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
