Summary

This position is located on a Forest Service Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. The incumbent of this position serves as a recreation assistant responsible for organizing and administering a conventional basic recreational and physical fitness program or segments of an entire program.

Duties

Help

Provides on-site supervision of recreational activities to students with various skill levels and backgrounds. Ensures a safe, healthy atmosphere for all students performing recreational and physical fitness activities. Ensures that self-directed activities are carried out in accordance with the recreational plans. Identifies and makes changes in processes and/or procedures in order to have full participation by students.  

Schedules, coordinates, and supervises recurring group activities such as basketball, volleyball, softball, including making reservations, acquiring transportation, and other related arrangements and providing information concerning these activities based on overall recreation program plans.  

Identifies and recommends changes or modification to the recreation and physical fitness program. Performs special assignments in facility-wide programs or volunteer sponsored activities.  

Meets individually with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered in recreational and physical fitness activities. Gives practical advice and counsel to students and proposes solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values.  

Serves as a lifeguard and water safety instructor.  

Ensures that facilities are properly prepared, including needed equipment and supplies are on hand for scheduled activities. Personally, makes sure the facilities are set-up for physical activities. Makes reservations, collects payments, and distributes information concerning games and activities. Responsible for ensuring students are aware of safety requirements concerning the activities, facility and equipment. Ensures compliance with and enforcement of all safety rules and regulations. Submits monthly recreation and other reports as required.  

Operates government vehicles to transport students to and from off-site activities. This may include operating buses with air brakes. 

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS: 

Incumbent must obtain and maintain all applicable Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINGERPRINT CHECK: Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
 

This position requires the selectee to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and therefore, is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. Applicant tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use unless they currently occupy a TDP under the DOT/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. Final appointment is conditional on a negative drug test. This announcement constitutes 30 days advance notice. 

Must obtain and maintain all applicable Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements. 

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-04 grade level.  

Specialized experience is defined as: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities. Teachers aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities. Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service. Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities. Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children). Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop. Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility. Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. -OR 

Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.-OR 

A combination of education and experience as listed above.

PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2019 Temporary Employment Hiring Season.

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition.  The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.
