You will serve as a Writer/Editor primarily writing and editing materials for NHTSA' s web properties and other digital platforms. You must possess experience in a variety of written communication styles to prepare content for delivery in a variety of digital and print formats. You should have a strong, plain language voice and use specialized web-publishing tools and programming.  You will report directly to the Office of Digital Strategies.

Duties

Help

The Writer:

  • Serves as a primary writer and editor for all digital properties providing guidance on effectively conveying agency priorities.
  • Writes persuasively and uses presentation skills to leverage the Drupal content management system to produce content that is engaging, informative, and complies with web accessibility best practices and 508 requirements, search engine optimization best practices, document tagging, and web content scalability required for the NHTSA.gov mobile-friendly platform.
  • Writes or edits materials for use in special media projects, social media activities, ceremonies, news conferences, mass media campaigns, and public meetings.

The ideal candidate for this mid-level position is driven, reliable, motivated, and has the capability to use plain language text to explain complex matters that are easily understandable. With guidance from the Director, Office of Digital Strategies, the candidate demonstrates a clear understanding of Agency issues, and provides sound, social media communications in a fast-paced, multi-tasking communications office. The individual has strong verbal communications skills, writing skills, editing skills, and social media skills to create meaningful communications interchanges to transmit information effectively.

The ideal candidate is fluent in the Drupal environment. The ideal candidate is resourceful and excels under tight deadlines and pressure situations that require providing timely and accurate information and reflects professionalism. The individual is the consummate team member who works cooperatively and effectively as part of highly adaptable, energetic social media and communications team and eagerly takes on challenging assignments and projects.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify on for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09, it must include:

  • Experience writing, editing and communicating information accurately about activities, programs and functions.
  • Experience using Drupal content management framework to create, edit and integrate web pages.



To qualify for the GS-11 on Education alone, you must have:

  • 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
  • You can also qualify based on a combination of higher level graduate education and experience.  This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application.  

To qualify on for the GS-12 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11, it must include:

  • Experience writing, editing and communicating information accurately about activities, programs and functions.
  • Experience using Drupal content management framework to create, edit and integrate web pages.
  • Experience writing and editing materials for use in special projects social media activities, ceremonies, news conferences, mass media campaigns and public meetings.

You cannot qualify on Education at this level, you must have Experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
