Duties

Help
  • Serve as Assistant Chief in charge of fire prevention programs with supervisory and management oversight responsibilities to develop, plan, update, coordinate, conduct and monitor organizational/installation technical services programs and training.
  • Establish methods, techniques, and procedures for effectively managing fire protection programs.
  • Provide direction on fire prevention and inspection operations.
  • Develop and implement training programs on procedures for responding to hazardous materials incidents and fires.
  • Prepare inspection schedules for facilities and fire extinguishing systems.
  • Supervise fire prevention personnel to include resolving complaints or grievances.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required.
  • Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements.
  • Applicant(s) not currently occupying a GS-0081 position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Incumbent subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Incumbent must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Incumbent must wear prescribed uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Work requires the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required.
  • Occasional travel required (not more than 5%).
  • Position designated as Mission Essential, required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations.
  • Incumbent required to work 60 hours per week (120 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Incumbent must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Rigorous heavy physical effort may be required in the handling of objects such as cylinders and extingushers weighing 45 lbs or more.
  • Position subject towokring under adverse environmental conditions. Incumbent must be able to maintain necessary alertness, self-control and emotional stability under emergency conditions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing fire prevention and life safety inspections, determining proper emergency response/equipment needs in an emergency situation, and reviewing plans/applying proper codes according to regulatory requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-10).
