The primary purpose of this position is to Protect "America's Gateway To Space" by providing the finest Fire Protection and Emergency services to our community through education, engineering and suppression.
- Performs Basic Life Support
- Drives and operates firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles
- Performs crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great
- Performs structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings, space launch facilities, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities
- Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities
- Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

QualificationsSPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes; (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
- Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.
- Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy; and of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordnance placement, and cabin layout to include layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply systems.
- Knowledge of Basic Life Support techniques and protocols.
- Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.
- Skill in operating communications equipment.
- Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; and to loft and carry heavy loads; and to apply Basic Life Support techniques and protocols.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Ability to lift and move heavy objects, such as charged fire hoses, fire extinguishers, equipment, and incapacitated persons. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as encapsulated suits weighing 50 - 60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZMAT spills, or possible explosions. May suffer from burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat, smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials, or explosions. Subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HAZMAT, and high noise levels. Must deal with victims in emergency situations that may be in varying stages of fright, panic, injury, and shock. May participate in mob or riot control. There may be hazards while operating or riding fire trucks at high speeds under adverse conditions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions. The work: requires the use of protective clothing or gear, such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, and/or shields.

1. Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
2. Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management
3. The employee is required to work a 72 hour week on a 24 hour on/24 hour off basis which includes weekends and holidays. Maybe subject to recall.
4. This is a Testing Designated Position.The employee is subject to random drug testing (IAW HQ-USAF letter dated 29 Jan 90).
5. This is a "Key" position, removal from military recall status is required.
6. This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
7. The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required.
8. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
9. May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC).
10. May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).
11. Employee is required to be Department of Defense (DOD) certified Firefighter I & Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, Apparatus Driver/Operator - Pumper, Apparatus Driver/Operator - ARFF and possess State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) - Basic Life Support (EMT-B) certification.
