Duties

Help
  • Independently plan, coordinate, and provide a broad range of advanced creative arts therapy services designed to meet the individually assessed needs of a wide range of psychiatric, substance abuse, and medical patients.
  • Design sessions using creativity and spontaneity to provide patients safe ways to experience and acknowledge expressions on a non-verbal and verbal level.
  • Evaluate clients with an art therapy assessment.
  • Evaluate the history, interests, aptitudes, and skills of patients by interviews, inventories, tests, and measurements.
  • Adapt or modify treatment procedures and employ new approaches and techniques where objectives are difficult to achieve due to the complexity and severity of patient's mental and medical condition.
  • Maintain records of patients' progress and reports findings to multidisciplinary treatment team for use in establishing unique individualized treatment plans.
  • Document progress, and planning and implementing termination sessions and termination summaries.
  • ?Develop unique and challenging mental health treatments through the creative arts.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • You must undergo a specific initial background checks, investigation and periodic re-verification check of multiple agency records to obtain and maintain a suitable determination to occupy a position having regular contact with children.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Creative Arts Therapist (ART):

A. Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in therapeutic recreation, art therapy, drama therapy, dance therapy, or music therapy.

OR
B. Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in a related field involving therapeutic emphasis or concentration that included at least 36 semester hours in therapeutic courses as described below:
18 semester hours of therapeutic recreation courses; and
18 semester hours that include a combination of abnormal psychology, physiology, human anatomy and development, disabilities and general recreation.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working with behavioral health patients; conducting art therapy groups; and entering data into electronic medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: therapeutic recreation, art therapy, drama therapy, dance therapy, or music therapy.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Education
