Duties

Help

As a Transportation Assistant (OA), you will;

  • Provide transportation program-related support and assistance by answering oral and written inquiries from the public and motor carriers, research and interpret Federal regulations, monitor, track, and maintain specialized FMCSA transportation safety related databases, and develop statistical transportation program-related reports.
  • Prepare various required reports by gathering information from appropriate sources.  Responsible for paperwork management,
  • Research, gather, and interpret a variety of Federal Regulations (e.g. US Code, CFR), and FMCSA procedures on a variety of transportation related issues and activities in response to inquiries.
  • Monitor, track, maintain, and utilize specialized FMCSA transportation safety related databases.  Track federal register information on rulemakings.  Prepare data for upload, requests downloads, and creates and generates reports.  Maintain computer data and appropriate software in a format that allows its use for reports, management review, and decision-making.  Compile data from computer or paper records and use software to create and modify programs to generate required reports.
  • Input data and track and monitor administrative data (utilizing office databases) for the Division, to include: budget-related data (cost/mileage used of GOV vehicles, cost data on office travel expenses, cost data on supplies/purchases, cost data on staff training).  Gives data to Division Administrator for incorporation into overall Division budget activities.
  • Respond to routine and technical telephone and written inquiries from the public and motor carriers on matters regarding Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and procedures, Hazardous Materials Regulations, and Commercial Driver’s License programs, providing interpretation of regulations and procedures.  Refer callers or written inquiries with extremely complex and highly technical inquiries to the appropriate technical staff member as required.
  • Compose routine correspondence concerned with areas of responsibility.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • TYPING: You must possess a typing speed of at least 40 words per minute with three (3) or fewer errors.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A background security investigation is required for all selected individuals. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of the security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the GS-6, on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-5, it must include: 

  • Experience compiling information for weekly or monthly activity reports.
  • Experience establishing and/or updating tracking or records/database management systems.
  • Experience using word processing software to prepare a variety of documents.

To qualify for the GS-7, on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-6, it must include:   

  • Experience researching information from regulations, records, and/or files and preparing reports and written correspondence.
  • Experience responding to inquiries (verbally or written) related to frequently asked and clearly stated transportation regulations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
