Duties

Help

Helitack Work 70%

Serves as a skilled member of a helitack crew. Regularly performs standard fire duties in the suppression of wildland fires. Loads helicopter cargo and completes manifest of crews and equipment. Rappels from hovering helicopter near ground level. Builds fireline and lays or directs hose. Patrols areas of controlled fires to mop-up. Cleans, reconditions, and stores fire tools and equipment. Independently or with one or two other crewmembers may be assigned to carry out specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire and burnout, construction of helispots, specialized helitack operations, and hover hookups. Performs fuel management and prescribed burn activities.

May be qualified as a Forest Service short-hauler.

Performs as a member of a fire crew assigned to suppress the full range of difficulty and complexity of fires. Uses standard forestry practices and techniques, and accepted fire suppression and prescribed burning methods used in various types of fuels and under a variety of weather and terrain. Observes, records, and preserves evidence of cause of fires.

Participates in fire and safety training in the techniques, practices and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment and vehicles used in fire line activities, with emphasis on those used in the particular function to which assigned.

Participates in crew proficiency checks and drills. Participates in safety sessions and fire critiques. Ensures own and others' welfare and safety in all aspects of the assignments.

May be assigned to fire lookout to provide detection and reporting of wildfires. Reports smoke and fire to a dispatcher giving location, estimated size and other pertinent information. Reports weather and fire behavior information keeping the dispatcher and/or other officials informed of current conditions.

May perform project work such as road and trail maintenance, habitat manipulation, and miscellaneous equipment and facilities maintenance.

May assist higher level workers in forestry/range research efforts; in the marketing of forest/range resources; or in the scientific management, protection, and development of forest/range resources.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINGERPRINT CHECK: Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.

 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

ARDUOUS FIRE POSITIONS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be employed in a position performing hazardous duties. An initial pre-employment medical examination is required for arduous fire positions. Failure to meet any of the required medical qualifications will be considered disqualifying for employment.

WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a "condition of employment." The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-04: (6) Six months of general experience and (6) six months of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-03 level.

General experience is defined as: Worked with tools and equipment used in laboratories or at field sites. Observed field work projects and recorded data. Identified plant or wildlife species. Collected data and used computers to input data and generate reports. Identified and cataloged artifacts and/or cultural resources. Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work of the position, e.g. unpaid experience include volunteer work, such as at a park, youth camp, scouting organization, hospital, community sports league, local fire department, etc.

Specialized experience is defined as: Performed a limited variety of manual tasks to accomplish fuels reduction work and suppress wildland fires using a variety of hand and power tools; As the instruction of a crew leader, patrolled fire line to locate and extinguish sparks, flare ups, and hot spot fires that might threaten developed fire lines; or the instruction of a crew leader, moved dirt, chopped brush, or felled small trees to build fire line using various hand tools and power saws to control spreading wildland fires and to prepare lines prior to prescribed burning.–OR

Successful completion of 2 years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. –OR

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.
