Summary

This position is in NASA's Pathways Intern Program which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. The individual assigned to this position will perform duties of a developmental nature, with oversight and guidance from experienced engineers in the organization. The Intern will perform basic engineering principles based on their academic study. The work may be performed in various organizations throughout the Center.

Assist engineering professionals with all aspects of technical environmental and programmatic assessment of ongoing environmental projects, documenting compliance requirements established by such laws as Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental policy Act, the Pollution Prevention Act, the Resources Conservation Recovery Act, the Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act and related Executive orders, State and Local laws and other environmental compliance requirements.

  • Interns selected are expected to report for duty on January 07, 2019.
  • You will be required to undergo a pre-employment background investigation.
  • You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.

Qualifications

Starting GS grade levels are determined by education level:

GS-04: Enrolled in a certificate program or associate's or bachelor's degree program and have completed at least 30 semester hours or at least 45 quarter hours of undergraduate education.

GS-05: Enrolled in a certificate program or bachelor's degree program and have completed at least 60 semester hours or at least 90 quarter hours of undergraduate education.

You must have an expected degree program completion date of August 1, 2020, or later to be eligible for this position. In the NASA Supplemental Questionnaire you will be asked, "What is the expected completion date for the degree you are currently pursuing or plan to pursue?" The date you enter will be used to determine your eligibility, and applicants who indicate a date prior to August 1, 2020 will be found ineligible.

Education

To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a degree in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science at an accredited educational institution. To find out if your college/university is accredited, visit the Department of Education website. The degree you are pursuing must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. To find out if a degree meets this requirement, ABET.

Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying.

The following major is preferred: Environmental Engineering

Additional information

You must meet eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

You will only be considered for the highest grade for which you qualify.

You may be required to perform rotational assignments in various organizations. Additionally, this position requires you to work a specific schedule such as one semester at school followed by one semester at NASA.

You must be able to work a minimum of three work tours prior to graduation. Work tours are defined as semesters/quarters.

Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completing degree requirements provided they:

  • Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale);
  • Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements;
  • Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
  • Maintain acceptable performance.
Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion. At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.

The Intern may be converted to a Environmental Engineer with promotion potential to the GS-13.

The payment of relocation expenses is not authorized.
