Duties

Help

As an Ecologist studying disease ecology within the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Designs and coordinates wildlife disease research related field and laboratory activities for specific projects.
  • Summarizes and analyzes data using appropriate statistical software and techniques.
  • Writes reports on scientific findings and recommendations and articles for publication in professional journals or publications.
  • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed in an office and out in the field. Rigorous demands may be placed on the incumbent periodically when conducting field work. Field work required heavy lifting of packs, boats, and related field equipment. Extensive hiking of up to 15 miles per day may be required. Time is spent outdoors during all seasons of the year, often in inclement weather with the potential of encountering bears and other wildlife. Steep terrain must be hiked or skied, and deep, cold lakes must be negotiated by canoe.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.  Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements:  (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record.  If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license and a copy of your driving record.
  • Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

In addition to the basic education requirements listed in the link above, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-09 level assignments include: 1) Coordinate and manage the collection of wildlife disease field data (e.g. serology, pathogen genetics, fecal parasites, etc.); 2) Conduct analyses on disease dynamics utilizing the appropriate statistical or modeling techniques; 3) experience in writing proposals for grant funding for wildlife disease projects; 4) participate in writing a scientific paper evaluating disease impacts, dynamics, and/or spatial spread.
