Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing and evaluating the following hydrological and climatic data as they pertain to scientific research inquiries.
  • Assisting with operational phases of custom computer programs aimed at processing hydrologic and climatic data using specified mathematical and numerical methods.
  • Evaluating and improving existing soil erosion and hydrological models to simulate the impact of climate change and variation.
  • Using Geographic Information System (GIS) software to improve the implementation of spatially distributed erosion and hydrological models.
  • Adapting research methods to resolve unexpected issues and ensure efficient execution of complex research studies.

Physical Demands

Physical dexterity and coordination are required to monitor, maintain or install network connections. The work requires occasional and moderate physical exertion, including work on a ladder during installation of cable runs, collection and transportation of soil core samples and water samples, and relocation of personal computers, workstations, monitors, and peripheral equipment. 

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in an office or laboratory; occasional work outdoors may require coping with hot or cold, humid weather. 

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, atmospheric science, meteorology, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels.

OR

Combination of course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized Experience :   Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-9

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience processing and evaluating hydrological and climatic data via statistical procedures and data analysis software to meet research objectives; assisting with the testing and implementation of  custom computer programs to process hydrologic and climatic data using appropriate mathematical methods and commercial software;  documenting procedures and findings of data analysis and assisting scientists in the preparation of peer-reviewed journal manuscripts and research presentations.

OR

Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or master’s or equivalent graduate degree in physical or natural science, or engineering.

OR  

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-11

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience processing and evaluating hydrological and climatic data via statistical procedures and data analysis software to meet research objectives; assisting with designing, developing, testing, and implementing custom computer programs to process hydrologic and climatic data using appropriate mathematical methods and commercial software;  reviewing documented research procedures and data analysis findings; and preparing peer-reviewed journal manuscripts and research presentations.  

OR

Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in physical or natural science, or engineering.

OR

Combination of education and experience as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
