    Responsibilities

    The OIG has an urgent need for a GS-0511-13 Auditor (Forensic), located in the Office of Special Reviews, who would be responsible for working on high profile, time-sensitive investigative review projects that are considered to be of special interest to VA stakeholders, including Congress, veterans, and the public. The primary purpose of this position is to conduct, lead, or participate in these projects at the direction of the assigned manager. The incumbent will author or assist with drafting reports published by the OIG, including reports which will provide VA with independent expert analysis, advice, and recommendations designed to improve VA operations and programs. The incumbent will routinely collaborate and coordinate with other OIG offices and directorates on projects.

    The Auditor (Forensic), located in the Office of Special Reviews is responsible for flexibility and capacity to swiftly review significant events and emergent issues not squarely within the focus of the OIG’s three line elements.  The incumbent will work on high profile, time-sensitive investigative review projects that are considered to be of special interest to VA stakeholders, including Congress, veterans, and the public. The position conducts, leads, or participates in these projects at the direction of the Office’s Executive Director and/or Deputy Director. The incumbent will author or assist with drafting reports published by the OIG, including reports which will provide VA with independent expert analysis, advice, and recommendations designed to improve VA operations and programs. Projects will routinely require collaboration and coordination with other OIG offices and directorates.

    As an Auditor (Forensic), you will:

    • Participate in multifaceted investigative reviews and special projects that are highly complex, time-sensitive, and of interest to the public, Congress and the national media. Assignments are broad and may require integrated analysis of various financial accounting or other systems.
    • Perform sensitive duties and assignments of importance to the Inspector General (IG) and other OIG leaders and function with a high degree of independence, flexibility, and resourcefulness in order to complete multiple and varied assignments on short deadlines. Identify matters for review and complete assignments as directed by the Executive Director, Deputy Director, IG or Deputy Inspector General (DIG).
    • Apply forensic auditing skills to identify and develop proactive initiatives for the detection of fraud, waste, and abuse in VA programs, including sophisticated use of technology to collect and analyze information from varied sources. Work collaboratively with other Directorates, including the Office of Investigations in referring matters for potential criminal prosecution, as appropriate.
    • Prepare accurate, thorough, and well-written reports. Review and edit written work product of peers.
    • Identify violations of laws, regulations, or VA policies and procedures that become evident in the course of a review; draft analyses, opinions, or memos; and make referrals to the other Directorates or Offices for potential investigations, audits, or inspections.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - 6-10 Nights Per Month. Travel nationwide under tight deadlines. The incumbent should anticipate frequent walking and standing as a component of this travel.
